Heroism is a misunderstanding for any who braves themselves into the role. They go in with personal reasons, but they come out with universal virtues. Bruce tried to play his hand, not of a hero but of a son trying to live up to his father’s image. But having lost his parents at such a young age, they are more story than memory. Their truth is hidden from them, and so he keeps what little he knows as his precious link between past and present.
It’s that very trait which Batman relies upon and which Riddler exploits. As it’s when we piece all the dots together to reach from our happy slumber to our disturbing realization that nothing is as it seems, we’re in for a true awakening. Bruce set himself up for this very journey, playing into the Riddler’s dilemma without even considering it.
But for Bruce to easily fall in such a trap is obvious, he’s inexperienced and has seemingly never faced a villain who’s very participation made Batman seem like a villain to himself. This…
